Valentine’s Day is a holiday full of mystery and legend.
St. Valentine's Day has both Roman and Catholic roots.
Some sources say that Valentine's Day is a holiday commemorating the martyrdom of St. Valentine; others say that it is the Christianization of a Roman pagan fertility festival named Lupercalia,
which was celebrated on February 15.
During the festival, young women would place their names in a large urn.
The young men would draw a name from the urn and then
be romantically linked with that young woman for the following year.
Still other legends cite the fact that February 14 marked the date when birds began mating.
In either case, Valentine greetings were popular in the Middle Ages written Valentines showed up in the 1400s, The oldest known valentine was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt.
Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.
It became a popular holiday celebrated by the common folk in the 1700s.
Valentine’s Day is also one of the most difficult days of the year for those
who are feeling unnoticed and alone.
